Can school teachers legally take away your phones?

Just before the school holidays, my phone got confiscated when it rang in class. Luckily it was my first time so teacher only confiscated for that lesson. Then it reminds me of how 3 of my classmates have had their phones confiscated for a full month. The teachers would give the sim card back, off the phone, keep it on their table/drawers, then call the parents. Parents can argue with the teachers for one whole day but they will not give a f**k. Is confiscating phones and other personal belongings legal? When the POLICE confiscates something they need a warrant but when teachers confiscate they don't need anything? What if you fail to comply by saying "Where's your warrant", can the school expel you for that, or will you leave a bad impression on the teachers only? Same goes for hair. Heard that long time ago some parent of a sec school student made a police report just because the school forced the student to cut his hair?

Thanks :D
