National University of Singapore (NUS) graduates are among the most sought after by employers.

Yesterday, NUS placed 17th in the world for turning out employable graduates, up from 39th last year.

Nanyang Technological University was 117th among 150 institutions.

Into its fifth year, the Global Employability University Ranking is designed and commissioned by French human resource consulting agency Emerging and carried out by German market research firm Trendence.

The survey was conducted with over 2,200 recruiters from 21 countries, including Singapore, who were asked to vote for the universities that were producing the best "ready-for-work" graduates.

Harvard University displaced the University of Cambridge at the top. The highest-ranked Asian university was Japan's University of Tokyo in 12th place.

NUS deputy president (Academic Affairs) and provost Tan Eng Chye said he was delighted by this recognition of NUS graduates.

He said the curriculum for degrees is developed closely with local and global industry leaders. Students in every faculty are encouraged to intern with top companies in Singapore and overseas or study abroad through the NUS Overseas Colleges programme in six business hubs around the world, including Silicon Valley and New York.

"This is a strong affirmation of the quality of NUS graduates and the university's focus on producing "future-ready" graduates," said Professor Tan, stressing that the fast-changing nature of knowledge and information made it important that students are agile and adaptable.

He said: "Through a holistic combination of local and overseas experiential programmes, enhanced general education curriculum and personalised career advising, we equip our students with the knowledge, skills and ability to approach ideas and issues in creative, thoughtful and multidisciplinary approaches."

The graduate employment survey for last year's NUS class showed it enjoyed a higher median salary than earlier cohorts.

The median gross monthly salary of fresh NUS graduates in full-time permanent employment was $3,200 last year, compared with $3,000 for 2013. Close to nine in 10 found jobs within six months of graduation.

The top 150 list is dominated by US institutions, which claim seven of the top 10 spots and 39 places in the overall top 150.

[Click here for discussions since 31 October 2015, when the flyer was released.]

When the new Joo Koon Bus Interchange opens in 2015, in either March or June, there will surely be a few changes to some bus routes, in particular those serving the Tuas and Pioneer planning areas and some part of Boon Lay planning area, as currently, there are only a handful of bus routes passing by the site where the new bus interchange is.

Based on the map (http://app.lta.gov.sg/data/apps/news/roads/2012/Award%20of%20Contract%20-%20Widening%20of%20Benoi%20Road%202.pdf) from LTA, it seems that all the buses will use Benoi Road, Jalan Ahmad Ibrahim and Pioneer Road to connect with Joo Koon Bus Interchange.

Those serving Tuas (182, 192, 193 and 254) and West-Pioneer (257 and 255) are likely to be shortened to originate from Joo Koon Bus Interchange, no longer going to Boon Lay Bus Interchange.

Those serving East-Pioneer and Boon Lay – 251 and 252 – are likely to be adjusted to ply between Boon Lay Bus Interchange and Joo Koon Bus Interchange, thus continue to originate from Boon Lay Bus Interchange. (I am not sure about bus route 249.)

The bus routes that will be adjusted to originate from Joo Koon Bus Interchange while remain in Boon Lay Bus Interchange will probably be re-routed somehow to patch up the loss links resulted from bus routes shortened and no longer going to Boon Lay Bus Interchange.

There may be (at least) one new bus route created that would originate from Boon Lay Bus Interchange and serve the Jurong West Extension, before going into the industrial area and Pioneer planning area, and terminate at Joo Koon Bus Interchange. This would compensate the loss of bus links resulted from bus routes 254, 192 and 193 possibly being shortened to originate from Joo Koon Bus Interchange. Meanwhile, LTA may take this opportunity to answer the requests from residents of the Jurong West Extension for bus connection to various amenities (example: Pioneer MRT Station) in the area.

Although unlikely, there may be an existing bus route in Tuas retained or a new bus route created to provide “inter-town” bus connection between Boon Lay and Tuas, without having to make a transfer at Joo Koon Bus Interchange or travel on the MRT.

As bus route 252 is likely to be shortened to terminate at Joo Koon Bus Interchange, the West of Kian Teck is likely to be served by “inter-town” bus route(s) or be served by the bus routes from Tuas, as they are re-routed to originate from Joo Koon Bus Interchange.

When Joo Koon Bus Interchange opens by June 2015, what kind of changes (besides Boon Lay Bus Interchange having less number of bus routes) would you expect to see?

Last reply by jurongresident on 17 Nov `15, 2:46PM:

After almost two years of discussion, the big day is finally here. In just three more days, the brand new Joo Koon Bus Interchange will open.

Today, I saw something at boarding berth B4 of the new Boon Lay Air-Conditioned Bus Interchange. Next to the green colour signboard for bus service 199, there is a new addition. It is a blank grey colour signboard, with what seems to be a sticker of the same colour pasted over it. I guess it is for the new bus service 258 that will begin in three days' time.

It is probably temporary; When bus services 182, 182M and 257 are amended out to the brand new Joo Koon Bus Interchange the following week, that signboard could be replaced with a new one at another place.

Water level in Linggiu Reservoir low, could affect SG

Water level in Linggiu Reservoir hits record low, continued dry spell could affect Singapore

SINGAPORE - The water level in Johor's Linggiu Reservoir has dropped to a historic low and Singapore's water supply could be affected if the dry weather continues, Minister for the Environment and Water Resources Masagos Zulkifli said in a Facebook post on Friday (Nov 13) evening.

Due to low rainfall, the water level in Linggiu Reservoir has dropped from 55 per cent in August this year to 43 per cent now, said Mr Masagos, who was at the reservoir on Friday morning.

The Linggiu Reservoir regulates the flow of Johor River, from which Singapore and Johor draw water for treatment. Mr Masagos noted that although Singapore can still draw 250 mgd - millions of gallons per day - from the Johor River "on most days", the low rainfall has affected both Singapore and Johor's water supply.

"Water rationing exercises are already ongoing in many parts of Johor. If the dry weather continues, it will eventually also affect us," he added.

He hopes that the annual northeast monsoon will bring more rain over the Linggiu Reservoir catchment area. "I have asked PUB to give me another update on the water situation in December when the monsoon sets in."

Singapore's strategy of diversifying its water supply "has served us well", said Mr Masagos. The PUB has been running desalination and NEWater plants at high capacity to keep local reservoir stocks healthy.

But if the water stock in Linggiu Reservoir does not recover, Singapore may have to do more to conserve water, such as restricting water use for non-critical activities such as washing cars, water fountains and watering plants.

He urged all Singaporeans to do their part to conserve water.

Meet the woman who has made playing with food her job by creating incredible pieces of edible art. From city landmarks to colorful animals, Anna Keville Joyce lets her imagination run wild by way of intricate artworks made entirely from food.

Using anything from vegetables to sausages, she creates pieces that are so detailed, at first glance it is difficult to tell what they are made from. But the 28-year-old solves this by surrounding her complete pieces with the foods she used. Even though the American artist, who lives in Buenos Aires, Argentina, can spend up to six hours decorating one plate, her artworks usually perish after only a few hours.

Instead of just introducing another service to ply this road again (unless demand necessitates it), you could actually consider improving existing links between Jurong East and Bt Panjang, especially 160 and 178.

A while ago someone suggested splitting 178 up to manage it more efficiently. I thought having separate sections of 178 (Boon Lay - BBDEP) and 968 (Woodlands - Jurong East / Clementi) would be a good idea.

On 160, consider adding a variant that plys Bt Batok Rd to hasten the journey, seeing as 160 has terrible frequency. Such as this one:

Service 150: Jurong East Int - Dairy Farm Rd (Loop)

  • Jurong Gateway Rd
  • Boon Lay Way
  • Jurong East Ctrl
  • Bt Batok Ave 1
  • BB West Ave 6
  • BB St 11
  • BB West Ave 3
  • BB Rd
  • CCK Rd
  • Upp Bt Timah Rd
  • Petir Rd
  • Chestnut Ave
  • Chestnut Dr
  • Upp Bt Timah Rd
  • Dairy Farm Rd
  • Petir Rd
  • Jelebu Rd
  • Bt Panjang Rd
  • CCK Rd
  • BB Rd
  • BB West Ave 3
  • BB St 11
  • BB West Ave 6
  • BB Ave 1
  • Jurong East Ctrl
  • Boon Lay Way
  • Jurong Gateway Rd

Alternatively, you can always fall back on a 160M looping at BPJ MRT, or an extended 990 to Bt Panjang (as per suggestions above).
