IMO, the feeling of cheapo is there when riding A95..not sure why.

So far, A22s/A24s already faces some issue. You have the glue filling coming apart(on the A22 doors, can see from the nearside seats) etc. No doubt A95 will become like that sooner or later..Even seats that are not fixed properly are spotted..where's the quality?

Looking at the Wright, quite surprise that 1 of the WEG flooring starts to come out. Some of them have that creaking sounds too..but they are still surviving well though.

ADL uses plastic "like toys", aren't the others too? I know many bus fans went to "knock" on the side walls at the upper deck front, but mind that it's hollow..just added for design purpose. After so long, I've only seen the BS Sign having issue..other than that, nothing much. Given that the ADL vibrates a lot, they should shown signs of wear and tear easily if their bodywork quality is poor.

I can say that if ADL buses is bodied by GML, the bodywork will sure giveway soon. A95 is lucky that the bus is quiet and less vibrative, the impact taken is lesser than A22s..

One of your "good" quality Enviro 500s taken when it was a month old. Seems that your comment on things not being fitted properly is applicable here.

I think you have to realise asthetics is a separate issue to the structural issues that concern the buses. An Enviro may look nicer than a Gemilang, but the E500 body structure just doesn't seem as strong as even a China bus. Even China buses don't produce that kind of creaks. The bus just doesn't feel as safe as it should be for passengers.

Well, the Enviros are still new, we will see what kind of condition they will be in when they are the age of the PSV (CDGE) B9TLs. And The PSV B9TLs don't have that kind of creaks from the body, its a strong body just that it has a vibration issue.

I doubt the Enviro 500 body will last, structually that is, regardless of who is assembling it. And have you seen the quality of the roof sheeting from above, its atrocious, never seen a new bus with such wavy roof before. You want to know why Gemilang and Wright doesn't have this? Because Wright and GML don't roll the roof sheeting onto the roof structure, the technology used by Wright and GML are similar (if I'm not wrong, the Alusussie technology), and involves properly and precisely (ie machine) bending the metal to its required shape, instead of just rolling a sheet of metal and affix it (most likely with SikaFlex) to the roof structure.

Almost everyday , you will see advertisements of properties for sale in Malaysia , Iskandar developments , Penang , Malacca etc , Thailand in Sukumvit , Pukhet, Australi and New Zealand, UK apartments in London andeven coastal bungalows in Indonesia.

Most of these properties offered are residential properties and some Sohos and commercial properties. Some even promise gaurantee returns for two years. In Johore forexample prices have rising by more than 100% since two years ago and about 30% higher within the last 6 months.

All these developers ar etapping into the Singapore market which is flush with funds . Singaporeans who find that investing in Singapore properties are becoming too risky because of the all time high prices, and ridiculous prices which local developers , agents and speculators are asking , now turn to these overseas foreign properties ,

At exhibitions, tens of millionsof overseas properties are sold on the spot! Are singaporeans making the right moves?

DPP: KONG HEE A WELL-PRACTISED LIAR & WITHOUT CREDIBILITY

DPP: Kong Hee is a well-practised liar and a man without credibility

Deputy Public Prosecutor Mavis Chionh for the City Harvest Church corruption trial charged that the founder of City Harvest Church, Kong Hee, and his fellow senior pastor that the men are liars and men without credibility yesterday (Sep 14).

Photo of Kong Hee from charismanews

Photo of Kong Hee from charismanews

During the closing submissions in Court, the DPP told the court to reject Kong Hee’s testimony by calling him a “well-practised liar” and having “utter lack of credibility”. Kong Hee claimed that he had been acting on advice of his lawyers and auditors, and distant himself from the sham bonds which were used to fund his wife’s doomed music career.

“Far from being a mere figurehead… (Kong Hee) was a meticulous and details-oriented leader whose express approval was needed before the bonds could go ahead”

The DPP later attacked Kong Hee’s second-in-command senior pastor Tan Ye Peng for being a puppet to Kong Hee. DPP Mavis continued to attack former finance manager Sharon Tan as the accused had deceived auditors by altering board meeting minutes.

“The defence’s claim that this was a mere failure of corporate governance arising from ignorance…was absurd, given the sophistication and scale of the church’s operations. CHC was not some struggling new voluntary outfit run by bumbling amateurs with no experience of the financial world.”

DPP Mavis also attacked John Lam who was both the investment committee member and a church board member, for covering up the sham bonds.

Serina Wee was not spared from DPP Mavis’s attack:

“(Serina Wee) was arguably the most inextricably involved in all the sham bond and the round-tripping transactions because of the nature of her role as the Crossover administrator.”

PAP MP Edwin Tong and also the lawyer for Kong Hee claimed that every single cent drawn from the bond went into the Crossover project and that Kong Hee and his fellow accused did not make a personal gain. However Edwin Tong did not point out that the one person making all the personal gains is Sun Ho, the wife of Kong Hee.

City Harvest trial: 7 quotable quotes from Friday's hearing

Final arguments for the City Harvest Church (CHC) case were made by both the defence and prosecution in court on Friday (Nov 20).

The defence pleaded for leniency on behalf of the six church leaders, including founder Kong Hee, while the prosecution maintained that they had abused the trust placed in them

Some church followers started queuing from the wee hours of the morning to attend the session.

Here are some quotes that stood out:

"ALL OF THEM LOVE THE CHURCH AND MEANT NO HARM TO THE CHURCH WHATSOEVER. EVERY CENT THAT WAS DRAWN OUT WENT TO THE CHURCH. NONE OF THE ACCUSED BENEFITED FROM THE PROCEEDS IN A WRONGFUL MANNER."

- Mr Edwin Tong, lawyer for church founder Kong Hee

"HOW MUCH WEIGHT CAN THE GOOD CHARACTER OF A SHEPHERD BE GIVEN IF HE IS ALSO A WOLF AT THE SAME TIME?"

-Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Christopher Ong

"IN THEIR ZEAL, THEY'VE CROSSED CERTAIN BOUNDARIES. BUT FOR THE SAKE OF THEIR YOUNG CHILDREN, WE PLEAD FOR THEM TO BE SPARED JAIL TERMS."

- Letter from 173 church executive members pleading leniency for the accused

"HIS FAILURE IS THAT HE SHOULD HAVE QUESTIONED, AND HE DIDN'T BECAUSE HE TRUSTED HIS SPIRITUAL LEADERS."

- Mr Kenneth Tan, lawyer for ex-CHC finance committee member John Lam

"SHE'S A FOLLOWER, ALTHOUGH SHE WAS ON THE BOARD FOR A TIME. SHE WAS NOT A PRIEST COMMANDING RESPECT IN COMMUNITY AND WIDER SOCIETY. BEFORE SHE WAS CHARGED, IT IS SAFE TO SAY THAT SOCIETY DID NOT EVEN KNOW WHO SHE WAS."

- Mr Andre Maniam, lawyer for ex-finance manager Serina Wee

"KONG HEE CLAIMS TO BE REMORSEFUL AND SORRY FOR THE CRITICISM THE CHURCH FACES. HE HAS NOT ACTUALLY SAID SORRY FOR HIS PART IN THE OFFENCES."

- DPP Christopher Ong on Kong Hee

"IN A WAY, THE SECULAR SYSTEM MIGHT NOT REALLY UNDERSTAND THE SPIRITUAL REASONS FOR THIS PROJECT. IT MAY BE QUITE CONTROVERSIAL AND PEOPLE MAY THINK (KONG'S WIFE, MS HO YEOW SUN) IS TRYING TO GAIN FAME AND ACHIEVE STARDOM BUT THAT'S DEFINITELY NOT THE CASE."

- Mr Tan, who has been with the church for a decade, started queueing outside the State Courts at 3am

After each paper, you may post your discussions about specific questions from each paper, here in this thread.

Be sure to get at least 8 hours of sleep the night before each paper (it's actually better to sleep more than mug more the night before), and of course a healthy, nutritious, light and safe meal (nothing too spicy, fatty, raw or dangerous enough to cause vomiting and/or diarrhoea) about an hour before each paper so you've sufficient glucose in your brain.

Alternatively, if you're too rushed to have a meal, at least have some energy snacks (eg. Kit Kat, Kinder Bueno, Snickers, Mars, etc) and a can of isotonic drink (eg. Aquarius, Hundred Plus, H2O, Pokka Sports Water, Pocari Sweat, etc).

And if you've a headache or at risk of getting one during the paper, swallow a pill / tablet / caplet of Panadol, the locally available brand of Paracetamol, ie. N-(4-hydroxyphenyl)ethanamide just before the paper, *provided* you've already safely taken Paracetamol many times in your life, and so you're 100% sure you're not allergic to Paracetamol, which will be deathly fatal for those allergic to it.

Enjoy your papers! ;Þ

This is indeed the trickiest question out of the entire P3 (and arguably P2+P3 too). Well done, your mechanism is correct. The thing you now need to figure out is, do you know why your mechanism obeys 1st order kinetics for both H+ and HMF? ;Þ

Newbie programming courses in SG to whet your appetite

As someone who learned programming myself, I can tell you that while the plethora of online lessons offered by CodecademyCode School, and Coursera are great, nothing beats sitting down together in a room to learn from an experienced hand.

While online courses are convenient and fun, it lacks the social element and peer motivation that powers a learner to the end. In other words: you’re more likely to give up.

In Singapore, there are several options if you’re looking to learn programming in a classroom setting. Here’s a list of places that offer such courses.

See: Learning to code? I did it for 2 years – here’s what I learned

General Assembly

General Assembly launched in Singapore recently, and is a fairly well-known brand in startup education. It offers eight to 12 week full-time courses in web development, user experience design, and soon, Android development. It also has eight to 12 week part-time courses focusing on back-end web, front-end web, and iOS programming.

Other non-programming but startup-related courses include data analytics, data science, digital marketing, product management, user experience experience design, and visual design.

The full-time immersives will set you back upwards of S$10,000 (US$7,070) while the part-time courses cost north of S$3,500 (US$2,474).

Location: The Working Capitol, 1 Keong Saik Road, Singapore 089101

The Pragmatic Lab

The Pragmatic Lab has been around since 2011, and was recently acquired by Alpha Camp, a similar school from Taiwan. It has three offerings: iOS, Android, and web programming (focusing on HTML and CSS). Courses cost between S$750 (US$530) to S$2,200 (US$1,555), and can be taken full-time or part-time.

Location: Ming Arcade, #05-01, 21 Cuscaden Road, Singapore 249720

Alpha Camp

Alpha Camp runs courses in Singapore now. It has a learn-as-you-build 6-week part-time course for beginners to turn their ideas into an iOS app, as well as a deeper 10-week bootcamp that incorporates web or mobile programming with digital marketing and general startup skills. Pricing details have not been released yet.

Location: To be confirmed

StackUp

StackUp is a new initiative by the National University of Singapore’s Institute of System Science to teach beginners how to code. Three courses are on offer, taking a student through building a web app, creating both the frontend and backend, and using APIs. Pricing undisclosed.

Location: To be confirmed

SAE Institute

If your goal is to make your own game, SAE Institute is an option. This is the Singapore branch of an education franchise from Australia which was founded in 1976. It offers part-time and full-time diploma and degree programs in games development. The full-time route will take a year to complete, and it’ll cost about S$20,000 (US$14,000). A part-time option is available for the degree program.

SAE also offers a part-time iOS programming course lasting four weeks. It costs S$1,250 (US$883).

Location: The Riverwalk, 20 Upper Circular Road, #01-42/49, Singapore 058416

Tinkercademy

If you’re into hardware hacking and Arduino boards (an open source circuit board equipped with sensors), Tinkercademy has something for you. While the company primarily runs courses for students in partnership with schools, it has some light one-off lessons in Arduino programming for the public.

Does it matter what food you ate?

End of the day, it's what that makes you full that matters?

Are you disappointed with the interest earnings you are getting from your savings account?

If you have some spare cash and are thinking about starting your investment journey, we at GET.comwill walk you through the 5 main things you should consider before taking the plunge.

1. Do You Have The Right Mindset?

Many of us have been taught from a young age to save money, so we religiously save a portion of our income each month for rainy days.

However, with the low interest offered on savings accounts in Singapore, it's hard for us to hold on to the value of our money, given that the returns are typically lower than the inflation rate.

Starting an investment journey requires an understanding of the risks involved in investments. If you want better returns, it has to come with a higher risk.

If you think that “losing” money will make a big emotional impact on you, then investing may not be for you.

2. Risk Tolerance

One of the first things you need to understand about yourself is your risk appetite. This will impact the type of investment vehicle you choose.

Lower risk profiles would typically choose fixed income instruments or bonds which are usually principal-guaranteed.

They work in similar ways to a fixed deposit, in the sense that selling your investments before the maturity date will impact the returns you earn.

This amount should be money that you will not need for a while so that there will not be any need for sudden withdrawal.

If you are one of those who are willing to take a bit of risk, you will have more instruments to choose from.

Again, you need to decide what threshold you can tolerate so that you do not sell your investments once you see some losses taking shape.

You might also want to think about managing your wealth in a portfolio perspective – allocating a different percentage of your wealth in various asset classes with different risk.

This can ensure that you do not put all your eggs in one basket and lose everything if one instrument does badly.

3. Trading Is Not Investing

Related to point 2, investing builds on a long term horizon of at least 5 years. This means you will need to be able to let the prices of your chosen investment asset move up and down without any panic to cut losses or take profit.

Studies have shown that the longer you hold onto your investments, the lower the likelihood of losing money.

Those who are looking to making a quick windfall are considered speculators rather than investors, and they usually have a bigger risk appetite.

4. Types Of Investment Instruments

After determining your risk appetite, you can then have a better idea of what investment instrument is suitable for you.

This is a general guide:

Low risk profiles – cash investments such as deposit accounts

Medium-low risk profiles - government bonds, corporate bonds, funds with principal-guaranteed returns

Medium-high risk profiles – stocks, exchange-traded funds, property

Here you can find out how much money you need in order to start investing.

5. Tracking And Review

There's no point in investing if you don't track and review your investment annually. The market cycle changes and different environments can impact your investments.

It's wise to have an annual review to check whether your investments are fulfiling your investment objectives, and check if you need to switch to other instruments that have better potential returns.

Remember to take into consideration the costs of your investment as well, such as any management fees you'll need to pay to fund managers or trading costs.

Costs can eat into your investment returns so it is important to take them into consideration.

Lastly, remember that it is more important to allocate your assets proportionately to your needs rather than spend too much time picking the “right” investment instruments.

A well-balanced portfolio will be able to tolerate market volatility for any one of your instruments, so that you will still achieve protection for your assets.
